“We realized that the range of frequencies that the brain can perceive in human speech is far greater than we originally thought,” said lead researcher Dr. Adina Roskies, “which means with the right magnifications, we should be able to make sign language intelligible with a simple implant.”

Currently, many deaf people depend on sign language interpreters to communicate, but because of the difficulties in understanding context and facial expressions, this method isn’t always effective. “I think it’s unfortunate that so many deaf people are cut off from creative forms of expression,” said Roskies, “and hopefully our device will allow them to express themselves fully. Of course, there are also medical applications – for example, brain implants could help treat epilepsy by monitoring activity in certain regions.”

Other researchers at the meeting presented work on how to use high-frequency ultrasound beams to improve hearing loss treatments. Ultrasound treatment is already used clinically to stimulate nerves deep within the body without incisions or surgery, but this technique only works if the nerve endings are close enough to each other. Using a beam of high-frequency ultrasound, researchers can now stimulate far more remote nerve endings – creating a new way to treat deafness.

“We have shown that we can stimulate the auditory system at a distance,” said Dr. Roozbeh Jafari, “which makes it possible for us to address a broader range of patients with hearing loss.”

The doctors involved in these studies hope their work will lead not just to life-changing advances for deaf people, but also an improved understanding of how the brain processes sound and language. By unlocking some of nature’s most complex puzzles, they hope that one day scientists will be able to use this knowledge to help those with other neurological conditions as well.

“We’re on the cusp of many medical breakthroughs,” said Dr. Jafari, “and soon there will be no neurological problem that we can’t solve.”

Anthony R. Bell, a cognitive neuroscientist at the City University of New York, explains that deaf people who are implanted with cochlear implants are able to detect sounds but are largely unable to understand what people are saying.

This technology has essentially enabled deaf people who use hearing aids to interpret conversations just as well as someone without disabilities.
